75 Climbs, 8,325 Steps, and an Unforgettable Day on Jacob’s Ladder!
If you happen to see our incredible Director, Kerra, walking a bit gingerly this week—or avoiding stairs entirely—now you know why!
On Saturday, 8th August, Kerra took on her biggest physical fundraising challenge yet. She tackled Falmouth’s famous Jacob’s Ladder. For anyone who hasn't visited this iconic local landmark, it is a steep, gruelling flight of 111 granite steps connecting The Moor to Vernon Place.
Last year, Kerra conquered the steps 50 times. But as a Community Interest Company providing vital play and creative arts therapies across Cornwall, we always aim higher for the children and families we support. This year, she upped the ante—setting a massive target of 75 consecutive climbs.
5 Hours, 8,325 Steps, and a Lot of Jelly Babies
Completing 75 rounds means Kerra climbed a staggering 8,325 steps in total—roughly equivalent to scaling the highest mountain in England and Wales!
She smashed the challenge in under 5 hours, powered by absolute determination, bottles of Lucozade Sport, handfuls of Jelly Babies, and a very welcome, delicious pastry kindly donated by the lovely team down at Olfactory Coffee Roasters.
It was a real, bruising struggle, and Kerra admits she is still feeling the deep burn and pain today! But every single step was worth it.
Humbled by Our Incredible Community
While Kerra was doing the hard work on the granite, her son and I stood at the bottom of the ladder holding our Out of the Woods charity pots. To say we were humbled by the generosity of the Falmouth community is a massive understatement.
Passersby, locals, and tourists stopped to cheer Kerra on, dropping a phenomenal £300 in cash straight into our buckets. Combined with our online sponsorships, the event has raised just shy of £1,500!
Every single penny of this money goes directly towards funding local children through therapeutic play and creative arts therapy interventions.
Stories from the Steps
Beyond the amazing financial support, the day was rich with community spirit. Standing at the bottom of the ladder, we had the privilege of chatting with so many wonderful people who shared their own histories with the steps.
We met older locals who laughed as they remembered running up and down those 111 steps to get to school and back including 2 additional journeys for their croust!
Most movingly, one lady stopped to tell us a story about her Aunt, who was actually standing on Jacob's Ladder during World War II when the Central Methodist Church right next to them was bombed. Miraculously, her Aunt survived that historic day—a poignant reminder of the deep roots, resilience, and history embedded in this little corner of Falmouth.
